Spreading the Link Love

In a crudely transparent ploy to thank those of you who link to articles here on Adverb, I’ve added a script to the sidebar that sends a link back your way. The script simply calls up the Technorati “most recent 15 incoming links to Adverb” API into the space below the “Music for Monkeys” playlist in the sidebar. So a thank you and a reminder: teacher says, every time you link your site to Adverb, an angel gets its wings.

What can I say? It’s a perfect storm of “I’m lazy” and “I have no shame.”

Cute! Oh here comes my annoying geeky “but”….except technorati only checks links that are visable in the RSS feed, and some sites (like mine for example) don’t put all links in the small teaser part of the feed sent out. No biggie. But then add to it that technorati also misses a lot of blogs (that don’t ping them) and you get a little less accurate link-in widget. Ideally you’d actually show the real ref’s from your referer logs, but ref-spammers ruined that sort of fun. A combo of ping places like technorati might show more link-ins! I’ve got a widget that is a sorta pingback on mine, it collects all the referer links and I see which ones are real and which ones are pure spam so I approve the real ones. Seems no matter what these days, human eyes are the best way to weed out spam.
