The Wait Begins

Four years of waiting before the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

I’m counting on Patrick inviting everyone over for a month of footy. I don’t take up much room on the sofa and I hardly ever snore.

Warren, the Harmel in “Dieste Harmel & Partners,” is from South Africa. The early formulation of my plan has me stowing away inside his luggage the next time he decides to pay a visit to his home.

Until then, I’ll be suffering through World Cup withdrawl.

Like the Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer, I was both frightened and amazed by this game.

I’ve heard of refs letting players play, but that was futbol? Yikes. Zidane? Wtf?

Maybe they had words over who had the better dives during the match?

It might not sound sporting of me, but I prefer a good physical match (as long as the ref is calling it equally on both sides).

I especially enjoy it over a cooly clinical and robotically methodical game– of the type the Germans played a couple of WCs ago.

So I have to say, part of me was aghast when Zidane played “el toro” on the field, but only because it was a cheap shot away from the ball.

Otherwise, I liked seeing the passion.

And I hated to see the Cup decided on PKs.

No prob on the contact. It’s the dives and crying foul that gets to me. (Surprised Kleenex didn’t have any in-stadium ads.)

Full contact could actually be one of the ways American’s NFL/NHL crowd gets sold on the sport: TV that focuses on the one-on-one battles/match-ups.

RIght now, it’s like the old days of baseball on TV: Long POV shot down over the the catcher trying to see the whole game at once.

Germany played clunky, plodding-along soccer, no finesse.

I’ve always hated PK’s to determine a winner, even a Golden Goal.

I don’t think a game in any sport should be decided differently than the way the it was played up to that point. 19 innings for Chi/Bosox the other day? Fine with me.

(Speaking of a tangental rant on OT: the NFL should follow the NCAA model. Each team gets one set of downs. No sudden death. Make both defenses have to work to stop a team, not just one.)

Another suggest: educate by the leveraging our love of other pro sports by mixing in stars from those sports. I think the new Nike does that with what appears like Kobe juggling a ball? (Just looked on jogabonita.com and it’s not there,

I think people seeing someone like a TO/Insert popular non-juiced MLBer/Shaq talk about how hard it is to play and show them trying, would help give the sport more respect.

Also, joga has a cool idea to upload your own video of people passing the ball along.
