Watching the Daily Show tonight, I’ve just seen a commercial touting Arby’s new “Chicken Naturals” sandwiches.
In this particular spot, a Dame of, oh I don’t know, 120 years or so (and looking every bit of it), proclaims herself to be Joan Rivers. Why does she look so different?
Because of the chicken sandwich.
(It’s so natural, you see, she (:cough:Joan:cough:) decided to “go natural,” herself.)
This is a total mis-message.
Every consumer who sees this– and who doesn’t watch it with an ad monkey’s perspective– will take away Joan Rivers + Arby’s = two steps from death.
Arby’s Brand Managers take note: you thought this one through too much. Please stop thinking.
If someone sends in a link to this spot (or if I come up with it), you’ll see it here.

One of the Head Ad Monkeys at Dieste Harmel & Partners (hint: his name is on the door) has an idea for rebuilding New Orleans. You can listen to it via DHP’s podcast, “Latincast.”

Phone service, including Internet, was down at Casa de Monkey over the weekend and that kept me off the computer (and nose-deep in newsprint). I had some “free swim” time on Saturday and drove around looking for a bar with Wi-Fi but couldn’t find one. My favorite juke-joint would have done nicely but they didn’t open until after my free swim time so I had to settle for a great burger sans online time. It’s probably for the best; I’d have a hard time explaining to our Masters of I.T. that my DVDrive won’t spin because of the unfortunate placement of a frenchfry.
Fortunately, I’ve got most of my scripts in place (in-line audio and video, and scripting over to AdVantage, a pseudo photoblog of my ad travels) and just lack a couple of things (say, a scripted solution that will easily handle and manipulate IMG tags in the background). But, for only being up and live for a few days, so far so good.
If any of you AdBloggers out there use WordPress, feel free (please!) to drop a line.
